Wildlife in your community
Posted on January 25th, 2008 in environment, vancouver |
After writing up the Green Spaces pillar in my beta civic platform, I’ve been thinking a lot about how wildlife interacts with urban life.
Now, I know people don’t like commenting as much as they like reading, but I thought I may as well try.
I’m really interested in what types of wildlife you’ve seen in your community. Feel free to jot down some animals and your city in the comments section.
Here’s mine:
Surrey
- Raccoons
- Coyotes
- Possums
- Mice
- Squirrels
- Chipmunks
- Herons
Vancouver
- Skunks
- Raccoons (in Yaletown no less!)
- Herons
Burnaby
- Squirrels (they’ve taken over Central Park!)
- Ducks
- Rats

yes, rats too,
All in Vancouver…
I’ve seen skunks wandering around in the West End on numerous occasions, and yet I’m also surprised to see them.

Oooh I wrote a post about rats in our various cities a lil while ago :-P I think for Vancouver you can also add in all the marine wildlife, we always end up seeing a harbour seal when we’re out on the sea wall.
Port Moody:
Bears
Grouse
Raccoons
Seals
Otters
rats
coyotes
Surrey:
hawks, bald eagles, various small birds
park dwellers: squirrels, rabbits, ducks, herons, bald eagles
North Vancouver:
squirrels, bald eagles, ducks, geese, herons, hawks, various small birds, rats, raccoons, bears, skunks, deer, and marine wildlife. Phew!
Saw a cat playing with a dying garden snake in North Vancouver last summer.
