Surrey council campaign!

If you’ve come here looking for info on my run for council, please visit my campaign website at paulin08.com. There’s a full platform over there.

This site has always been a personal venting area for me. And let me just say what a wild ride this whole campaign has been. I’m extremely excited with the response I’ve been getting, and am delighted that I was able to really put light rail on the table for Surrey. It’s something we need to do, and we need political leadership to accomplish it.

I don’t want to start writing my memoirs before the campaign is done, but whatever happens, I’ve certainly learned a lot, made a ton of connections, and feel proud of the campaign I’ve run.

At this point, here’s my prediction. One of three things will happen. I’ll either:

  • Win at the lower scale
  • Just barely lose, but get a very strong turnout
  • Lose horribly

I’m very passionate about transforming Surrey into a major city on the national stage with clout, pride, and a new face to show the world – a leader in sustainability, cultural diversity, and community participation.

I’m prepared to do everything possible to make this vision a reality and my goal, at the end of a three year term on council, would be nothing short of having a light rail system under construction, the greenways network completed, and a vibrant bustling City Centre bursting with sustainable development.

Vote Paul Hillsdon. Saturday November 15th.

  1. Go Paul! I regret that I haven’t been able to come out to show my support for you at your rallies, as this has been an incredibly tumultuous time for me, but all the best, we’re rooting for you from Vancouver, and no matter what the turnout is, you will have had done more than most of us will ever do.

  2. Good job, Paul.

I think, if there’s a next time, the key is to adopt a less confusing position for the average schmo, and you’ll win a seat. Against Skytrain, for light rail, and “neutral” on Gateway? Why not just for light rail and against Gateway? People don’t understand the difference between Skytrain and light rail, and being neutral on Gateway might make one wonder if public transit is really the huge priority it is for you.

Nevertheless, I strongly believe you should run again next time.

  3. Big congrats, Paul! You got people thinking and talking about light rail and your other issues, which I hope means they’ll bring it up with Watts’s team. You’ve got many more opportunities ahead of you and I’m eager to see what you do next. I’d say “let me take you out for a drink” but, hehe, I can’t, so let’s do lunch sometime. I’m so proud of you! What was your favourite part?

Two of the 3 councillors I voted for got top votes here, but unfortunately one of the ones — maybe the only one? — that mentioned light rail came in 7th. Nevertheless, it feels good to participate. And in Vancouver, I hope Gregor doesn’t forget our conversation…

  4. Awesome job Paul.
Keep it up. You’re an amazing guy and your public service sets an example for everyone, young and old.
Hope to see you around at some of our events!
Josh (Vancouver Public Space Network – non-partisan, of course, but always encouraging of people’s involvement in the political process!)
